The euro is the currency used by the Institutions of the
European Union and it is the official currency in 17 of the 27 member states of the European Union: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain.
It was introduced on 1st January 2002.
The euro is the second most traded currency in the world after the United States dollar.
