The Five Senses: Smell

To begin to understand what smell is we must talk about the organ responsible for this sense: the nose
The nose is a protuberance located between the eyes and the mouth. It is part of our respiratory system,  allowing us to breathe in and out. In addition to breathing, the nose allows different odors to enter from our surroundings.

THE PROCESS OF SMELL

1.  Molecules in the air reach the nostrils by breathing.
2. Specialized receptor cells called olfactory receptor neurons detect the odor.
3.  The olfactory receptors transmit the information to the olfactory nerve, which is located at the back of the nose.
4.  The olfactory nerve sends the information to the brain and the brain interprets the information as smell.

INTERESTING FACTS

Resultado de imagen de smell
  • People can detect at least one trillion distinct smells.
  • Olfactory cells are renewed every 30 to 60 days.
  • Women have a better sense of smell than men.
  • Dogs have nearly 44 times more olfactory cells than humans .
  • Each human being has their own distinct odor.
  • Our sense of smell peaks during our late teens, when we are around 18 or 19 years old.

Christmas 2018

Here you have the videos to practise the Christmas Carols you have chosen to perform on the last day of class before Christmas

6A Jingle Bells

Dashing through the snow
In a one horse open sleigh
Over the fields we go
Laughing all the way;
The bells on bob-tail ring
they make our spirits bright
What fun it is to ride and sing
A sleighing song tonight

CHORUS

Jingle bells, jingle bells
jingle all the way!
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh
Jingle bells, jingle bells
jingle all the way!
Oh what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh

A day or two ago
I thought I'd take a ride
And soon Miss Fanny Bright
Was seated by my side;
The horse was lean and lank;
Misfortune seemed his lot;
He got into a drifted bank
And we, we got upsot

CHORUS

Now the ground is white
So go it while you're young
Take the girls tonight
And sing this sleighing song;
Just get a bob-tailed bay
two-forty for his speed
Then hitch him to an open sleigh
And crack! you'll take the lead

CHORUS

6B We Wish You a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
and a happy new year

Good tidings we bring to you and your kin

Good tidings for Christmas
And a happy new year
Oh, bring us a figgy pudding

Oh, bring us a figgy pudding
Oh, bring us a figgy pudding
And a cup of good cheer

We won't go until we get some

We won't go until we get some
We won't go until we get some
So bring some out here

We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
and a happy new year

We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
And a happy new year
We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
And a happy new year

6C Santa Tell Me

Santa tell me if you're really there

Don't make me fall in love again

If he won't be here next year

Santa tell me if he really cares
'Cause I can give it all away if he won't be here next year
Feeling Christmas all around

And I'm trying to play it cool

But it's hard to focus when I see you walking around the room

Let it snow, it's blasting now
But I won't get in the mood
I'm avoiding every mistletoe until I know
It's true love that he thinks of
So next Christmas
I'm not all alone, boy
Santa, tell me if you're really there

Don't make me fall in love again if he won't be here

Next year

Santa, tell me if he really cares
'Cause I can't give it all away if he won't be here
Next year
I've been down this road before

Fell in love on Christmas night

But on New Year's Day I woke up and he wasn't by my side

Now I need someone to hold
Be my fire in the cold
But it's hard to tell if this is just a fling
Or if it's true love that he thinks of
So next Christmas
I'm not all alone, babe
Santa, tell me if you're really there

Don't make me fall in love again if he won't be here

Next year

Santa, tell me if he really cares
'Cause I can't give it all away if he won't be here
Next year
Oh, I wanna have him beside me like oh-oh-oh

On the 25th by the fire place, oh-oh-oh

But I don't want no broken heart
This year I've got to be smart
Oh, baby

If you want me, if you want me
Santa, tell me if you're really there

Don't make me fall in love again if he won't be here

Next year

Santa, tell me if he really cares
'Cause I can't give it all away if he won't be here
Next year
Santa, tell me if you're really there

Don't make me fall in love again if he won't be here

Next year

Santa, tell me if he really cares
'Cause I can't give it all away if he won't be here
Next year

The Nervous System: Neurons

NEURONS are the cells of the nervous system. They have different parts with different functions:

-Cell body: it controls the neuron and creates nerve impulses.
-Dendrites: specialized projections that bring information to the cell the body.
-Axon: specialized projection that takes away information from the cell body.

NEURONS create electrical signals called nerve impulses to transmit messages from one cell to the next. The information goes from dendrites to axon in a neuron. There is a space between neurons called synapse and the nerve impulse needs chemicals called neurotransmitters to pass this gap between one neuron's axon and reach the next neuron's dendrites, where it becomes an electrical signal again.

(Pay attention: this is not explained correctly in your textbook!)

NEURON SONG
(from http://ihaveago.com)

Verse 1 -

A neuron is a cell of scientific fascination,

They receive, process and transmit information,

They allow us to think, solve problems and grow,

To learn the things we thought we could never know.

Chorus -

My abilities can be developed

With dedication and effort

When I find the right strategy

The one that works best for me.

Verse 2 -

Our brains have billions of neurons in a busy constellation,

Connected by branches in a network formation,

They fire in patterns, electrically,

Creating every feeling, thought and memory.

(Chorus)
Verse 3 -

Whenever I struggle, make mistakes and corrections,

I’m creating and strengthening my neuron connections.

Stimulating my brain and making it grow,

Making room for all the new amazing things I know.

(Chorus)

Interaction: the Nervous System

The NERVOUS SYSTEM is the system that receives all the information captured by the senses, interprets it and responds or reacts to each situation.

It has special cells called NEURONS and it is divided into two parts:

1. The Central Nervous System

2. The Peripheral Nervous System

1. Central nervous system: the brain and the spinal cord.

A. The BRAIN is the most important organ in the nervous system and the main control centre of your body, like a computer. It has three parts:

FUNCTION
a. Cerebrum
It controls intelligence, memory, personality, emotions, speech and voluntary movements (reading, jumping, etc.) It has different areas or lobes with different functions.
 b. Cerebellum
Balance, movement and coordination
c. Brainstem
It controls involuntary movements (breathing, heart beat, blinking of our eyes, etc.) It links the brain and the spinal cord.

   B. The SPINAL CORD

The spinal cord is made up of nerve tissue forming a long, thick tube within our spinal column. It is almost like a highway connecting the brain to all the bodies’ nerves. The spinal cord is responsible for all the reflexes, like when you touch something very hot and you take your hand away instinctively, without even thinking.

2. Peripheral nervous system:

It is a set of NERVES which travel around our body. There are two types of nerves:

       a. Sensory nerves: carry information received by the five senses to the brain.

     b. Motor nerves: transmit the brain’s responses to the muscles, joints and skin, which results in movement or a physical reactions like sweating.
